Our Scientific Advisory Committee: the healthcare professionals and scientists who guide our work.
The committee advises the trustees on our scientific guidelines and on how research funds are spent, across our four prevention areas.
- Blood sugar & metabolic health
- Cancer
- Brain health
- Heart and stroke

Welcome to our four new members
Four doctors and scientists have joined the committee this autumn.

Professor Ben Bikman, PhD
Professor of Cell Biology and Physiology, Brigham Young University
Professor Ben Bikman, PhD, is Professor of Cell Biology and Physiology at Brigham Young University. He earned his PhD in bioenergetics and completed a research fellowship in metabolic disease in Singapore. His laboratory studies insulin, insulin resistance and ketones, and their role in obesity and chronic disease. He is the author of Why We Get Sick, The Carb Crisis, and, with David Keuilian, How Not to Get Sick. He is also General Editor of the Journal of Metabolic Health.

Dr Isabella D. Cooper, PhD, AFHEA, MRSB
Biochemistry and medical pathophysiology scientist, University of Westminster
Dr Isabella Cooper is a biochemistry medical pathophysiology scientist at the University of Westminster, where she completed her degree in biochemistry and her PhD in hyperinsulinaemia and ketogenic science. Her KetoSAge clinical trial studies what happens to markers of ageing, insulin, growth factors and cancer risk when ketosis is suppressed in healthy women. She founded the Forever Young Group, a research collaboration spanning biochemistry, physiology, nutrition and pathology.

Professor Richard J. Johnson, MD
Professor of Medicine, University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus
Professor Richard Johnson, MD, is a kidney specialist and Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. His research on fructose and uric acid led to the "survival switch" theory: that an ancient pathway designed to help animals store fat for lean times is being switched on by modern diets. He has published hundreds of papers and is the author of Nature Wants Us to Be Fat, The Sugar Fix and The Fat Switch.

Dr Adrian Soto-Mota, MD, PhD, FACP
Physician scientist, Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán, Mexico City
Dr Adrian Soto-Mota is a physician scientist and internal medicine specialist at the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán in Mexico City, where he leads the Metabolic Diseases Research Unit. He completed his doctorate at the University of Oxford on ketone esters for diabetes. His research includes the Lipid Energy Model, which explains why some lean people see large rises in LDL cholesterol on low carbohydrate diets, and reanalyses of landmark diet trials. He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine of Mexico.
